Bengaluru: With onion prices touching Rs 70 a kg on online platforms, the National Cooperative Consumer’s Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) on Monday commenced the sale of onions through mobile vans across the city at Rs 35 a kg.
NCCF, a central govt organisation, started the sale of onions under the Price Stabilisation Fund at subsidised rates to make it affordable to people.
At present, onions are priced between Rs 60 and Rs 65 a kg at various wholesale and retail stores in the city, while online platforms are quoting Rs 70. Earlier this month, these pungent bulbs touched Rs 100 a kg thanks to heavy rain and disease spiralling in onion harvests.
According to an NCCF release, onions purchased from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh are being sold in 15 areas across the city until Thursday. NCCF branch manager Ravi Chandra said each assembly constituency has been allotted four mobile onion vans.
