Panaji: In contrast to the usual winter trend, the prices of onions and tomatoes in Goa have dropped, offering relief to consumers.
Onions are selling at just Rs 22 per kg in wholesale markets. At retail outlets, onions were priced at Rs 40 per kg, a sharp decrease from last week’s Rs 50 per kg and Rs 60 per kg in the weeks before that.
At the local Goa State Horticultural Corporation Limited (GSHCL) outlets, onions are being sold at Rs 40 per kg. According to GSHCL’s managing director, Chandrahas Desai, the prices are expected to drop even further. “There was a gap between the first and second crops because of unseasonal rainfall in Dec. This led to a shortage after the first crop, which caused prices to rise. However, the second crop, coming from Baramati, Nashik, and Pune, has now arrived and is bringing the prices down,” Desai said, adding, “We expect prices to fall further.”
Onions are typically more expensive during the winter months, and in some winters, prices have even soared to Rs 110 per kg.
Along with onions, tomato prices have also seen a significant drop. Tomatoes, which were selling at Rs 40 per kg just a month ago, are now priced at just Rs 20 per kg at GSHCL outlets.
“This reduction in prices of both onions and tomatoes is good news for consumers who have been struggling with high prices this festive season,” said Asif Shaikh, a vegetable vendor in the Panaji municipal market.
